Real estate developer and charitable donor Marcus Hiles was an early advocate for the inclusion of pets in today’s rental marketplace. In anticipation of market demand, Hiles incorporated pampering amenities for domestic animals into upscale communities designed and created by his Dallas-based company Western Rim Property Services. Hiles notes that the trend will continue well into the future. Studies noted in prominent publications reinforce the growing demand for acceptance of dogs and cats, illustrated by a March 15, 2012 Adweek article illuminating 2010 census numbers. 43 million households noted having four-footed roommates, while only 38 million households have children. An article in the Jan. 2, 2014 Wall Street Journal stated, “People in their 20s and 30s right now are less likely to have a family and more likely to have a pet,” furthering the demand for dog- and cat-friendly rental units.
